This is one of those pricy and terribly delicate tissue "diableries" or "devil views" that were terribly popular with our squeamish (?) Victorian ancestors. The images are quite dramatic when viewed with the light coming from behind them. The demons' little pricked eyes really glow and the tinting shows. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to reproduce this effect in a scan. These devil views are true 3D and real photo (how do you get a demon to pose anyway?), being a primative form of "claymation." The devils are little models in clay. The French inscription below the images translates as "The Entrance to Hell." The French inscription above the archway translates as "Enter who/what you know and leave hope behind." |
