Student Activities

            Tuesday

1.      Students will discuss with the student teacher jobs children can have.  Responsibilities and rewards will also be brought up.  We will also briefly discuss pets people keep.  The student teacher will ask, “If a person who watches babies is a baby-sitter, what is a person who watches pets?”

2.      After announcing the title and author, students will glance at the pictures of the story.  Based on the title and pictures, the students will write a prediction of at least two (2) sentences in their RES notebook.

3.      Students will listen and follow along as the student teacher reads Arthur’s Pet Business.

4.      Students will write three to four (3 – 4) sentences in their RES notebook about their prediction.  Sentences should address if their prediction was right or wrong and how they know.

5.      Students will share their predictions and afterthoughts and will answer questions about the story as a group.

Wednesday

1.      In a brief discussion, students will recall the title, characters and plot of Arthur’s Pet Business.

2.      The student teacher will show the story map.  Students will be asked to name the different parts of the story map.  They will offer ideas of how and why the story map could be used in reading and writing.

3.      Students will remove page 17 from their Practice Books.  As a class we will read the directions and begin the page.  After starting the story map, students will complete it individually.  When they are finished, the page will be put in the Work Folders to be handed in.

4.      The class will focus their attention on the overhead to go over the story map.

Thursday

1.      Students will be encouraged to recall the discussion of jobs from Tuesday.  The discussion will be revisited as we discuss the importance of those jobs.  Students will be asked to take out their DA (Daily Activities) notebook and turn to the sentences they wrote about their imaginary business.

2.      On a blank piece of paper, students will draw three pictures.  One picture will be of them at the beginning of their business, one of them in the middle, and one of them at the end of their business.  Students will write one sentence describing each picture.

3.      Students will share and discuss their pictures.  The pictures will be placed in the Work Folders to be collected.

Friday

1.      Students will participate in a discussion about events and their results.  Students will be asked to define as best they can the words “cause” and “effect.”

2.      Students will remove page 22 from their Practice Books.  This page will be placed in the Work Folders when it is complete.

3.      Once all folders are away, the class will go over the page.
