Welcome to My Hobbies/Interests Page |
Reading
One of my main hobbies is definitely reading. I read mostly fantasy novels. However, I also enjoy stuff like Shakespeare. And my fav poet is Samuel Taylor Coleridge. My most recent booklist:
George R.R. Martin -- He's working on a series, but only released two so far.
A Game of Thrones -- The story begins here, where you meet the Stark family, and the Baratheon family. Robert Baratheon is the king, and Eddard Stark is his good friend. Together they keep peace throughout the land. However, a tragic shadow falls across the land, and all hell breaks loose. I can't say much more than that without giving away most of the plot.
A Clash of Kings -- The story continues with wars, death, and dragons as everyone scratches for his own glory, wealth, and land.
Robert Jordan -- He's written quite a few books, but the only ones that I've read are the Wheel of Time series. They are some of the best books I've *ever* read. Jordan is an amazing fantasy writer.
Wheel of Time series -- I've read all but the eighth. Too much to even summerize, I'll just say it's a struggle between Good (The Creater) and Evil (The Dark One). There's a lot of magic and prophesies, and people from different places and of different cultures. You read as wars rage and people and cultures interact. And all the while the Good and Evil hunt and kill each other, each wanting control over the world.
`Dragonmount` A very good site for fellow WoT fans.
James F. Beveridge's Wheel of Time Sketches This guy is amazing! He has illustrated much of the first book, and they actually look how I pictured the characters. This guy's just an amazing artist!
Terry Goodkind -- I was introduced to fantasy novels with Goodkind books.
Sword of Truth series -- I've read all but the 5th, which came out after I had started reading the Jordan books. It was awhile ago that I read them, so I don't remember too much. But they're very good fantasy books with dragons, kings, magic, and wars.
Kurt Vonnegut -- A friend of mine suggested this book and let me borrow it. I read it in two days.
The Sirens of Titan -- This is not a fantasy book, like I typically read, so I was a bit skeptical. It's more of a science fiction type thing. It's about the future, and it explains the whole point of our existance. I really enjoyed it.
Mercedes Lackey -- A friend of mine let me borrow one, and I was hooked five minutes into it.
The Last Herald Mage series -- These are the only books of hers that I have read, but I've heard she has meny other good ones. This trilogy centered around magic and love is wonderful.
The Mage Storms trilogy -- I'm currently reading book three. Although it's not as good as The Last Herald Mage trilogy, it's very good, and I recommend it to any Lackey fans.
David Eddings -- I heard from quite a few people that he is really good, so I decided to give him a try.
Polgara the Sorceress -- This book was really good! I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading more of his books.
Buddhist books -- My beau, Josh, is really interested in Eastern religion. He suggested a couple of books about Buddhism, and let me borrow his.
Being Peace, by Thich Nhat Hanh -- I read this book in about 2 days, it's very interesting. I thought it would be boring and dry, but it's actually very good. I learned a few things from this book; how to better live my life.
It's Easier Than You Think: The Buddhist Way to Happiness, by Sylvia Boorstein -- I'm still reading this one, it's also really good reading.
Guitar |
Ok, yeah, I own a guitar. A really nice, electric one. A black and white Fender Strat. (Like the one above on the left) But that doesn't mean I can play!! Everone seems to think so... I wish I could play. I fool around a lot, and there are a few songs (or parts of songs) I can play. But really, I can't do much. I'd love to be able to though.
Fender Fender World! ... Enough said!
Fender Forum A discussion page... for all you "fenderholics" out there (and you know who you are!)
Writing
I like to write... I love to write. I write poetry and short stories mainly. Maybe one day, when I get up the guts, I will add a link and create a page with some of my stuff on it. But for now, I'm just too self conscious about my writing! Here are some good "classic" literature sites:
Shakespeare ... everything he ever wrote. What a great site!
Eliot, T. S. 1920. Poems. T.S. Eliot....what a great writer
Lawrence, D. H. 1916. New Poems Another good one
Shelley, Percy Bysshe. 1901. Complete Poetical Works What a great poet! Up there with Coleridge.
The Samuel Taylor Coleridge Archive Oh yeah, the man was a genius!!
Josh
Josh is my boyfriend. I guess he fits under this catagory, considering I *do* spend a lot of time with him. He is a really sweet guy. We've been dating since August of '99. He also attends Tech, he's a third year student. But you can learn more about him by visiting his website: josh baugher
Renaissance Faires |
I lived in Fredericksburg, about 10 miles from the Faire. My two best friends dragged me into the faire life, and I've loved it ever since! I worked at the Fred. Faire, but took it a step farther over the summer. My friend and I went on a road trip to Wisconsin, and lived for two weeks with a friend on the Bristol Ren. Fairegrouds. It was great! We didn't get paid for those weekends, we just played!! We had our own costumes (my friend and her mom made them both) and just had a blast! You can see some Faire pics if you go to my picture page. To learn more about Faires:
The Renaissance Faire of Renaissance Entertainment Corp. Great site for all REC faires!
Renaissance Faires What a great site! This place has link to (I think) every faire in the US, plus links to much, much more -- such as costuming info, the renaissance period, fantasy pages, and just *so* much stuff!
National Renaissance Faire Directory Links to every faire!!
Leather armour = Maspien This is the page for the business, Maspien Armours... one of the many vendors at some of the faires. Two friends of mine own this business, it's all hand made leather armor... great stuff! Check out their site!
Sports
I like to watch sports, mostly. I like football, Green Bay and Pittsburg. But watching it in person is *much* better. I went to every Tech home game this season. I also like baseball, and since I'm originally from GA, the Braves are my team. I also watch hockey occasionally, and maybe some soccer.
As for playing sports, I *love* soccer. I was on a rec team for about 3 years, but when we won 3 county championships in a row, the last one 6-0, our coach entered us in a travel league. A lot more competition, a lot more work, but we still did good. I miss some of the girls I played with... we sure were a great team! I also played in a lot of tournaments with that team. I can't play on a team here, but I still love to kick around a soccer ball : ) ... but I'm very aggresive (my nickname in the team was "killer") and I've perfected the slide tackle (shattered someone's knee once, but it was perfectly leagal) so I don't mess around much!
I also love to play (just messing around) frisbee, volleyball, and *tackle* football.
Tattoos and Piercings
I guess I don't have enough to really consider this a hobby, but it's definitely an interest. I have one tattoo, on the back of my right shoulder. It's a red and green gecko with yellow eyes, pretty cool. I want a dragon on my back, but I don't yet have the funds for that. Piercings are more my thing, because they're cheaper and less permanent. I have eleven right now. A 12 gauge in my belly button (I've had that since I was 14, so don't even think about accusing me of being trendy), two 14 gauges in my right eyebrow, a 10 gauge and a 12 gauge in the lobe of each ear, a 12 gauge in my tongue, a 16 gauge in each cartilage, and a 14 gauge horizontal clitoral hood ring. I want to get another 12 gauge in the lobe of each ear, a 16g tragus piercing, maybe another eyebrow ring, and I think that's all I want ... but it's *so* addicting. The rush alone is almost worth it. I don't need drugs, I just go get holes in my body! I think tattoos and piercing are a form of personal expression, and anyone who judges or discriminates because of them a fool.
