My School
I attend Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VA Tech). I am a sophomore and my major is Wildlife Science. I'm not sure what I want to do with it, though. I know I want to work with animals, I just don't know how!! Here are some links to different university sites:
The College of Natural Resources This is the college I'm in.
Clubs and Organizations
Here are the clubs I'm involved with or interested in.
The Wildlife Society
I'm in the Wildlife Society right now. We do a lot of cool things... work with bears, salamander collections, trail work, hikes... it's a really cool club if you're into nature and wildlife. They also go to elementary schools and educate children about wildlife and conservation issues. I think that's awesome.
The Wildlife Society Info about the club, what they do, and lots more.
Freethinkers
I'm on the listserve for the Freethinkers group, but I haven't actually gone to any meetings. They discuss a lot of controversial issues, dealing primarily with religion. I consider myself a humanist, if anything.
"Humanism is a philosophy, world view, or life stance based on naturalism, the conviction that the universe or nature is all that exists or is real. Humanism serves, for some humanists, many of the psychological and social functions of a religion, but without belief in transcendental entities, the supernatural, or an afterlife. Humanists seek to understand the universe by science, using its methods of logical reason, empirical evidence, and skeptical evaluation of conjectures and conclusions. Humanists affirm that humans have the freedom and obligation to give meaning, value, and purpose to their lives by their own free thought, free inquiry, and responsible, creative activity. Finally, humanists stand for the building of a more humane, just, and democratic society by a realistic ethics based on human reason and experience in the light of scientific knowledge, and judge the consequences of human actions from the well-being of both humans and other organisms on Earth." -- The Virtual Community of Humanists
I know there are a lot of people that would disagree with my views, and that's ok, it's to be expected. I've had a few heated arguements about religion. I enjoy discussing topics like god and the bible with religious people, I find it fascinating.
Freethinkers at Virginia Tech Info about the group; you can join the mailing list from here.
The Environmental Resources Club
I'm thinking about joining the Environmental Resources Club. A quote from their page about what they do: "This new club is a means for students in Forestry and other Environmental Fields to get together and share experiences and information as well as participate in numerous campus and community service projects, helpful and informational workshops, and fun outdoor activities."
The Cave Club
I've recently started going to cave club meetings. They have meetings every Friday evening, and trips every weekend. I went caving once a few summers ago, in a cave that was condemned. It was one of the most awesome experiences of my life. So I'm going to start going on trips every weekend.
Sigma Alpha
Also, I'm now a sister of the sorority, Sigma Alpha. And before you think it's one of those social things that only cares about getting drunk and going to parties, let me set you straight. Sigma Alpha is a professional agriculture sorority. Even though I'm no longer an Animal Science major, I'm still interested in agriculture type things. Sigma Alpha does stuff like Adopt-a-Spot, Save Our Streams, Habitat for Humanities, Earth Day Awareness, and much more. They do a lot of environmental things, which interests me very much.
