Statement of Purpose The members of Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan of Irvine Valley College assert the propriety of its name for it accurately defines us and our purpose. Movimiento: we are a movement whose central goal is self-determination. Estudiantil: we are students who claim our rightful place in higher education. Chicano: this is our identity and the symbolic source of our power. Aztlan: today's American Southwest, the place of origin of the Mexica/Azteca, is our ancestral homeland. |

The MEChA de IVC states its purpose as the following: 1. It seeks to secure the right of Chicanos/a as they enjoy their right of access to and success in higher education with all its ensuing benefits. 2. It strives for the development and maintenance of its right of self-determination. 3. It serves as a social support group for the Chicano/a students on campus. 4. it serves as a focal point to help identify the political concerns of the Chicanos/as on campus and within the community at large. 5. It provides all Chicanos/as the opportunity to reforge their cultural awareness and to contribute to a context that embraces with pride their identity. 6. It seeks mutually beneficial relationships with other organizations supportive of the goal of El Movimiento in the specific, and of cultural diversity in general. 7. It opposes all forms of racism, sexism, and anti-semitism, homophobia and any other form of intolerance. 8. It strives to unite all Orange County MEChA's to unite as a community and a familia. With the spirit all are brothers and sisters. "La union hace la fuerza". |
