clear.gif (807 bytes)Juliet, at the beginning of the play, is a child who has no worries but she develops very quickly. Juliet is promised off to Paris, if she likes him. Her family has a party and she is supposed to meet with Paris to decide if she likes him. She really has not given much thought to marriage until her mother mentioned it. While at the party, Juliet meets Romeo but doesn't know that he is the son of her family's enemy. Juliet doesn't find out his identity until she has already fallen in love. Once she falls in love, Juliet devotes herself completely to Romeo. He arranges their marriage and she weds him in secret. She has grown into a woman, and even stands up to her father when he announces his intention to marry her to Paris in three days. After Romeo is banished, she threatens suicide if the Friar cannot think of some way to postpone her hurried marriage to Paris. She is very brave and takes a potion that makes her appear dead, all so she can be with Romeo. Due to an unfortunate misunderstanding, Romeo believes her dead and kills himself. Upon waking and finding her husband dead beside her, Juliet follows through on her earlier threats and stabs herself to death.
