The Ruler of Verona, and kinsman to Mercutio and Count Paris,
Prince Escalus is a fair man. He tries to solve the feud between the families by declaring
that the next to start a fight would pay for it with his life. He shows his fairness and
mercy when he banishes Romeo instead of executing him for the murder of Tybalt. At the end
of the play, it is the Prince who finally brings all of the secrets out into the open. He
admonishes both families for the hatred that has cost them their children. He also
admonishes himself, because his inability to cease the feud has cost him the lives of his
two kinsmen. |
