Romeo's best friend and a relative of Prince Escalus, Mercutio is a humorous, but violent person. Mercutio went to the Capulet party with Romeo and Benvolio. Just before entering the party, he delivers the famous "Queen Mab" speech about dreams. It is in this speech that we see that he is not just a comic, he has a serious, dark side too. Mercutio is very loyal. His best friend is a Montague, so he hates all Capulets. When Romeo refuses to fight Tybalt, Mercutio steps in to defend his honor. He is wounded under Romeo's arm as the young Montague tries to stop the fighting. Before he dies, Mercutio curses both houses, for their feud has ended his life. He is avenged by Romeo, who slays Tybalt.
