Tybalt is Lady Capulet's nephew and Juliet's cousin. Tybalt despises the Montagues because of the ancient grudge between their families. Every chance Tybalt gets, he tries to start a fight with a Montague. In the first Act, Benvolio tries to part his, and Capulet's, servants who had begun fighting in the square. Tybalt is so filled with hatred towards the Montagues that he says "Peace? I hate the word, as I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee." He begins the fight anew, and it becomes so violent that the Prince himself has to break it up. In the final scene of that act, Tybalt's hatred rears again when he discovers Romeo at the Capulet's annual party. He wants to kill Romeo on the spot, but his uncle, Lord Capulet, tells him not to fight because he doesn't want the party ruined and Romeo isn't really a bad kid. Later, in Act 3, Tybalt and Mercutio, Romeo's best friend, fight to the death when Romeo refuses to fight (because he is now related to Tybalt by marriage). Mercutio fights to defend Romeo's honor and is injured under Romeo's arm as Romeo attempts to break up the fight. Tybalt returns to the scene of Mercutio's murder to finish off Romeo, but Romeo kills him instead. You can see the devotion of his aunt, Lady Capulet, when she weeped and wailed over his body and demanded, "Romeo slew Tybalt, Romeo must not live!" Throughout the entire play, Tybalt is a man full of hatred, and it costs him his life. |
