At the church, Paris is asking Friar Laurence if he will marry Paris and Juliet on Thursday, just as Lord Capulet asked. Paris is discussing how Juliet has been acting, weeping and sad, to the Friar. Paris thinks it is because of Tybalt's death. As they are talking, Juliet walks in and she and Paris exchange a few words. Juliet asks to speak to the Friar alone and Paris leaves after kissing Juliet on the cheek.
Juliet and Friar Laurence go to his cell and she tells him her troubles. She asks him to help her or she'll kill herself. She tries to stab herself, but the Friar stops her. He says that he has invented a potion out of herbs and flowers that will make her seem dead, but she will just be in a deep sleep until she awakes forty-two hours later. The Friar sends her home with the potion andtells her to agree to marry Paris, then drink the potion so her family all thinks she died. He will get word to Romeo to come pick her up when she wakes up.
At the Capulet house, everyone is preparing for the wedding. Juliet goes to bed early and asks the nurse to leave her alone for the night. Juliet tries to decide whether or not to drink the potion, because she is afraid. But, she wants to be with Romeo, so she drinks it. The next morning, the nurse comes in and finds Juliet "dead" in her bed, so instead of a wedding they have a funeral. During the funeral, Romeo's servant, Balthasar, sees Juliet and rushes to Mantua to tell Romeo.
