clear.gif (807 bytes)Married to Lord Montague, Lady Montague is Romeo's mother. Benvolio is her nephew. Lady Montague has a tender-hearted, peace-loving personality. She breaks down when it comes to the fighting households. She cares deeply for her husband and her son. In the first scene of the play, Lord Montague wants to join in the fighting, but she says to him, "Thou shalt not stir one foot to seek a foe." She is worried that he will get hurt in the fight and won't let him go. After the fight, while talking to Benvolio, Lady Montague expresses her concern for Romeo. She says she's very glad he was not involved in the latest brawl, and is worried about how he has been moping around, depressed. When Lady Montague learns of Romeo's banishment for killing Tybalt, she is crushed. She dies the next day, some say of a broken heart.
