The Minister and Mountain OystersCopyright © 1997 Property of Deborah K. Fletcher for Florence MacLennan Brown. All rights reserved. In Nova Scotia, mountain oysters were a real delicacy. They were quite scarce and hard to come by, so we very rarely had them. One evening the minister was invited for dinner. Of course, we wanted to treat him to the very best meal we could. At the table, he exclaimed how delicious the food was, and asked what he was eating. We told him it was mountain oysters. He asked what mountain oysters were, and we politely hedged the issue, saying they were a delicacy and trying to change the conversation. Finally, when he had nearly finished his second (or maybe third) helping, I was pressed into a corner. What had he been eating and enjoying? What were mountain oysters? Hesitantly, I told him they were the testicles of sheep. The minister jumped up, bolted for the door, and threw up. Oh, what the power of suggestion can do.
