My father was an enlisted man in the navy.  During the war in Viet Nam he was in charge of a small pontoon boat (like you see in
apocalypse now) that patroled the rivers and swept mines from them so that larger boats carrying supplies & troops could safely pass.  He said they had a 50 caliber machine gun mounted on the boat and they would shoot up the river banks anytime they saw movement.  Frequently it was just a water buffalo.
One time his boat floated past a bunch of rotting corpses in the water.  The smell was so bad, that he lost his sense of smell.  30 years later, he still can't smell a thing.
He claims that he always wanted to be a farmer, but ended up spending his life out to sea.
