Guyana is a small country in South America and once used to be a British colony known as British Guiana. It is known in the philatelic world for the famous "one cent black on magenta" issue of 1856- the world's rarest stamp. The $30 stamp pictured here is a recent one and shows a waxwing. The country has a population of about 750,000 living on 215,000 kmĒ of land. "Guyana" means "land of waters" in a native language and befits the landscape that is cut up by a network of rivers. |
