.gif - Graphics Interchange Format

  • GIF's compression is called "lossless" - meaning "doesn't lose quality" when compressed.
  • Does not lose quality when compressed and decompressed.
  • Limited to 256 colors.
  • Used for cartoons, line-art, and flat illustrations rather that photos.
  • The only file format that allows for transparent images.

.jpeg - Joint Photographic Experts Group

  • One of the most efficient compression file formats.
  • JPG compression is called "lossy" compression - means the image "loses" quality during the compression process.
  • The file size of a graphic is smaller in the JPG version than in the GIF version.
  • 16 million colors
  • Ideal for Photos
  • Does not work well on simple graphics; image loses clarity and sharpness.
  • Does not allow for transparent images.
