The thin white line on the map above
shows which routes we took.

elephant Please note that all of the photos on these pages have been reduced—by 50% or more—simply to speed up the downloading process on your computer. Most (or all) of these thumbnails probably are too small to make for satisfying viewing, however larger versions of them all are online here, too. Each of these photos acts as a hyperlink—just click on any, and you'll be taken to the bigger shot.

Namibia (yes, that's a link for general info on the country) is quite a beautiful place in many ways: its gorgeous sand dunes running to the sea, the profusion of varied wildlife in its national parks, and friendly and laid-back people, just to name a few.

Animated map of Namibia-Africa When we entered Namibia—formerly South West Africa, before gaining independence in 1990 from its better known neighbor to the south—we took a basically south-to-north route, first making almost a beeline to the capital, Windhoek, and then up to the wonderful Etosha National Park. But we also took a little time to stop off at a few points along the way, namely the (windy) coastal town of Luderitz, and the very impressive dunes at Sossusvlei—the tourist headquarters, if you will, of the large Namib-Naukluft Park and supposedly the world's oldest desert.

Although there are some photos of other things on these three pages devoted to Namibia, the lion's share (sorry!) goes to the wild game we saw at Etosha—and that's where we'll start with this first page: 14 photos of giraffe, gemsbok, impala, rhino, elephant and a few others.

Unlike the first page of photos on South Africa, there's little in the way of explanatory text here. If you're not sure what something is, you can, as always, simply move your cursor on top of the photo in question.

Anyway, we hope you enjoy taking a peek at all the animals and other visual treats that Namibia had to offer us in the summer (actually, winter) of 2000...

Etosha—The Place of Dry Water...

A giraffe striking the pose: drinking is a somewhat awkward enterprise, no?! (Oryx and springbok are also visible in this shot.) CLICK HERE TO SEE THE LARGER VERSION OF THIS PHOTO . . . Crazy Kudu Safaris is an outfit that takes people all around Namibia, and even though we didn't use their services (we were pretty much self-contained with our camper), they come highly recommended.
