SvS Biology and Junior Science

Year 10 Genetics and Evolution

Your task is to complete web-based research to address the following issues, and to create one word document to summarise your learning.
  1. Find a website that shows you the composition of the earth's structure. (paste the URL into your word document)
  2. List the characteristics of the core, mantle, and crust.
  3. What causes a volcano to form?
  4. Find a picture of a volcano and make sure you can label all relevant components.
  5. What different types of volcanoes exist?
  6. State the location of current volcanic activity and eruptions.
  7. What causes an earthquake to occur?
  8. What is a seismograph?
  9. Define epicentre and P, S and L waves.
  10. Find out the location of current earthquakes.
  11. How does the Richter Scale work?
  12. Give a general idea of what plate tectonics is.
  13. Find information to show a knowledge of  mid-ocean ridges, ocean trenches, subduction, scarps, sea floor spreading.
  14. What is continental drift?
  15. Find and summarise information on how the earth has changed over the last 4.5 billion years with regard to continental drift.
  16. State one way that continental drift provides evidence for evolution.

You should use the search engine of http://www.altavista.com.au to assist you in your research. This search engine will allow you to single out documents that have images, animations, movies, sound files etc. You should site (footnote) the reference URL in your word document for each item of information that you produce.

Some other sites that will assist you in your research are:

continental drift
dinosaur evolution
Earthquake activity
Plate Tectonics
Volcanic Activity
Galapagos exploration
