Year 10 Ionic Stuff

Before you get started:

Learn to recall some ionic compounds - symbols and names by playing a matching game.

Advanced at this? Then have a game of ionic compound "concentration"

How do we write an ionic equation? Firstly, consider the following equation:

Na2CO3 + BaCl2 -----> NaCl + BaCO3

What you must answer:
1. Are all the reactants soluble in water (refer to page 35 or click here to help)?

Ans:
yes, except for BaCO3, which is insoluble as it is an alkali metal.

2. List them out as ions. (refer to page 4 or click here to help)
Ans: Na+1 + CO3-2 + Ba+2 + Cl-1 ----> Na+1 + Cl-1 + BaCO3

3. Now scrub out the ones that appear the same way on the left as they do on the right (these are called "Spectator ions" because they are not directly involved in the reaction)
Ans: Ba+2 + CO3-2 ------> BaCO3

What's going on?

Can you work it out?

Take a quiz to see how you are going.
