A translation of the Lodge's motto.
A benchmark decision should be a decision that is, to all intents and purposes, the most accurately derived from the pursuant's view-point. (ie, in this case the brethren of 218)
It was from this premise that the following translation of our Motto was determined.
SEQUENDO
"Sequendo" is the gerundial form of the verb, "Sequor", "to follow", "to
pursue".
LAMPADA
"Lampada" is the ablative form of the noun, "Lampas", "a light", "a torch",
"a flambeau".
"Lampada" is plural and from the Greek referring to a TORCH RACE(s), (similar
to the modern Relay Race), hence "a torch" is the more appropriate.
DISCO
"Disco" is the first person singular of the verb, "Discere", "to learn",
"to come to know".
"Literal" translations could be
(in descending order of accuracy, in regard to comprehensibility)
1. | "By following the torches I learn"
2. | "I learn by pursuing/following the torch"
3. | "I learn by following the light"
4. | "Following by the light I learn" |
Translation of Victorian Lodge of Research No.218 situation
While it is not totally practical to translate the motto within a few words, AND, as the Lodge of Research is a Masonic Institution primarily charged with the PASSING ON (as in a relay race) of masonic knowledge, the most comprehensible would be:
Remember that in ancient times, knowledge (and control) of FIRE was in the hands of only the most learned.
Final Comment
Maybe some members will consider their ideal to be:
"I learn
by pursuing/following the torch"
But I boldly put to you, that we, brethren of the Lodge of Research, should
strive for the higher ideal of
"I learn by
handing on the torch"
