Figuratively Speaking

Cassidy Melczak

In order to properly understand
All the nuances of poetic verse
You must learn to figuratively speak
So here I will rehearse

The first thing you must learn,
There is quite a lot you see,
Is the basic imagery
The image of a simile

A simile is as a painted picture
When life is like a hike
For you see a simile
Is comparing with as or like

To metaphor here now we come
We oft misuse this one
It is the icing on the cake
But a whole lot more fun

Strip the like or as away
And you may just find
That a simile is a metaphor
The gateway into the mind

Comparisons are easy
Not needing much skill
But with all the corny metaphors
You’ll surely get your fill

Halfway done two more to go
The nest one is so simple
That even a child could do them
Without displacing a dimple

When you learn just what this is
I’m sure you’ll hit the roof
A hyperbole that’s what it is
To exaggerate or spoof

But be careful not to overuse
As this been done before
Been overused a billion times
And yet we still adore

Personification is standing next in line
It should jump right out at you
Human traits to a non-human thing
This is personification its true

It is when the sun beats down
Or a wind whips up the street
For use of descriptive words
Personification can’t be beat

And now you can understand
That funny little way
That authors say not what they mean
But what they mean to say

This one is a persional favorite of mine, in English class, while our teacher was lecturing on the figures of speach, i started getting bored and described eachone with itself, i liked the idea and it evolved into this, an instant classic.
