As this will be the first of my official ramblings, although I have been doing this unofficiall for some time now, I shall welcome all that are interested in the peculiar thought of a pseudo-intelectual. Today's arguement is thus, has the very act of being humane caused our downfall? On a genetic level and a level of morality we as a society have been rapidly on a decline, what could possibly be the cause? As the word suggests being 'humane' is the basis of humanity, to retain the altruistic understanding of our fellow man is a quality most strive for, but could this be the down fall of ourselves in a total sense? The is at its root survival of the fittest, in the animal community we see that only the strong survive and necessarily so. To improve the inherited stamina of the herd, tribe or communal group, the weak are allowed to die off and their genes are not passed along to later generations of their species. Only the strong, healthy and clever can reproduce and carry on their lineage, which on across the eons results in a stronger, healthier, and more clever breed of animal. Ultimately beneficial to the species and even the environment that they inhabit. In the human society the same inherent weaknesses also exist yet because of our 'humanity' or maybe even just the unadulterated fear of mortality in general we do all possible to save this life. This life that , in the animal kingdom, would normally have passed away not to contaminate the genetic stream. This very act of empathy or other ulterior motives enables the defective members of this group to propagate their inadequacies. Our medical practices are intended to keep our citizens around long past their time (only if you have insurence!), thus allowing them to possibly have children where there would normally be no chance on this. Also another avenue of this same idea in the subject of En Vitro Fertilization. Artificial insemination lets children be born to mothers that would have otherwise been barren. What does all this mean? That we could possibly be breeding down to an eventually inferior society. Though that is not to say there is no hope, there is also another side to this complicated issue. It eeems that we as a people would not be this human species without this inherent quality some may see as a weakness. That if we chose actively to change for the betterment of our culture on a genetic level that would essentially destroy all that we consider our identity. Could a rose be the same rose that Shakespeare spoke of without its thorns? In addition we might argue that this behavior which seems to be destroying us all on a more physical level is in actuality impoving man in a much more important aspect. By stretching our gray matter to its limits in order to prolong every last ounce of life on this planet, we continue to evolve into an ever increasingly intelegent society. The rate of our knowledge grows exponentially by this seemingly contradictory act of preserving the weak genes lying just beneath the surface. Are we truely doing the good deed or only trying to deny the slow erosion of the high towers built of supposed superiority? This purposeful choice to actively cheat death gives birth to the ingenuity needed also for solving the problems of the ages. We must not ignore either the contribution that people with imperfections may make to our world. Long ago if a woman already having birthed three children that were blind, two deaf, and one mentally retarded had chosen to not have that child we would never have heard Beetoven's symphonies. Whether a person's flaws are physical or like myself more of a "sanity challeged" genre learning to live still is what makes us who we are. Yet as always the final judgement belongs to you, if you have any opinions or subjects to add to this commentary please write to DAngyl@aol.com and if your comment is at all constructive I will post the responses. |
