Lilith
A play by Remy de Gourmont
with an introduction by Fr. Nox
This play first appeared with this introduction in the
newsletter of the Dark Circle Collective in Sydney, NSW, Australia, and is reprinted here
with permission of Fr. Nox. (I am sorry, I am unaware of the date.) This is a dark rite of
sexuality, in my opinion, and despite one of the characters being named Satan, I do not
believe it to be a Satanic piece. Believe me, I am no Satanist, but I do have a minor
obsession for collecting Lilith stories and art, and so I offer it here in the spirit of
learning and curiosity.

Introduction
The evocative piece of writing that follows, Lilith, might be
described in the artistic sense as a "Black Mass of Sensuality". It was
originally written around 1891 by Remy de Gourmont as a one act play. this strange piece
of theatre has the dubious reputation of being the most unperformable play ever written,
which is all the more reason why occultists are beginning to take an interest in it. The
play - or rite, as I would prefer to call it - certainly lends itself to occult
interpretation.
Lilith became part of the collected works of Theatre de l'Oeuvre - Theatre of the Eye.
This most influential theatre was opened in 1893 by the actor Lugne-Poe. The intention of
this theatre was to provide a showcase for young playwrights, both in France and from
abroad, who could find no opportunity to bring their work before the public. The very
avant-garde nature of the play and the Theatre de l'Oeuvre makes one wonder whether many
modern playwrights and their audiences have not lost the sense of the uncharted and the
mysterious.
The question arises as to why you would want to perform this rite. And there are many
facets to this gem. Study of the play would indicate that de Gourmont's intention was to
use it as a dramatic mystery rite. Thus he reveals an unwritten aspect of history before
the time of the creation of Adam, Eve and the Garden of Eden; a sort of Akashic legend
performed or retold in order to gain knowledge of an event.
From an occult point of view, though, there are entirely different odds at stake. Perform
this as an Invocational Rite, a magickal act, and it would set in motion forces which will
seek their own realisation in those who perform it. To participate in such a rite would
unlock gateways of perception and give access to the primal forces personified by the two
deities of the "Mass". A word to the Wise. Use at your own risk.
Lilith: The Play
by Remy de Gourmont
Yahweh (Jehovah) created Lilith, the first woman. She immediately asked him for a mate and
he gave her to Satan!
Satan: | Greetings, companion, given to me by the inexperience of Jehovah! Greetings, beauty happily escaped from his ageing finger! Greetings whore! Greetings lewdness! I lacked that vice. Ha! This is a more pleasurable pasture than pride! Pride is hollow. (Freely caressing the breasts of Lilith, who offers no resistance and closes her eyes) This is full, this is warm, this is soft! |
Lilith is charmed by these manual greetings and falls back writhing and arching her body. But confronted by a woman he does not know, Satan becomes suddenly stupid and begins to knead her like heavy dough. He dribbles and his eyes grow bloodshot. Like a madman he growls, barks and bites. Then Lilith tames him with a skilful caress. Kneeling solemnly she kisses and adores the male, then lies down, dragging with her the enlightened demon, who has finally seen which acts and profanities Lilith desires. |
|
Satan: | Yes, this is how our first embrace should be, we two. We have corrupted love forever! We have turned it upside down! Female, I love you! |
Lilith: |
Male, I love you! |
Satan: |
Female, to you my ejaculation of the evening. |
Lilith: |
Male, to you my morning prayer. |
Satan: |
I shall inhale your sex like a bunch of lilac. |
Lilith: |
I shall feed your sex as if it were a little bird. |
Satan: |
My universe is there, under that shadow. |
Lilith: |
My joys fill my hand |
Satan: |
We have tasted both the bread and the wine. You do not understand? In four or five thousand years that joke will make its mark. You will see, it is rather blasphemous. |
Lilith: |
O my daily bread! |
Satan: |
O my cup of new wine! |
Lilith: |
I am hungry for your flesh, O my he-goat! |
They fall on each other, as though onto their prey, and writhe in frenzied curves. Then they sink down, shattered, their mouths open, their fingers like hooks curved into their palms. |
|
Lilith: |
(She speaks first in a sensuously weary voice, which does away in a caress after each invocation.) Iod, O male, God and Phallus, axis of the world and axis of the spirit, I worship you, Iod O male! |
Satan: |
He, O female, matrix and beauty, spiritual indolence, lasciviousness, I worship you, He O female! |
Lilith: |
O copulation, female and male, spout and calyx, obscurity of tomorrow, I worship you, Vau O copulation! |
Satan: |
He, O female! |
Lilith: |
Do not call me He, call me Sterility. Am I not the infertile woman? |
Satan: |
No, your son will be Sodom and your daughter Gomorrah. |
Lilith: |
May they be blessed, but may they be the only ones - and I shall be the happiest mother among mothers. Amen. O Father of future vices, give me the joy of my lips. |
