Crusty Capers: Earning a Crust

In a bakery lived some loaves of bread, they were very soft, because they had no crust. Half of the loaves were marked with a square on top and the other half the loaves were marked with a circle on top.

They decided to call each other names because they were different. They decided that the loaves marked with a square will be called boys, and the ones marked the a circle will be called girls.

When the bread got big enough, most boy and girl loaves could cuddle and the baker would sometimes give them a new baby loaf, which also had a square or a circle on it. Then they would be called father and mother and have a family.

This is story is about one of these families; John, Sally and their daughter Sue. This family lived in one corner of the bakery, near the cream puffs.

One day the John came home from work, and he was upset because his boss (a fellow loaf of bread) told him he was stupid after making a mistake. John thought that his boss was right, and the outside of his loaf started to form a crust.

Sally noticed that John had a crust, and asked him what happened. John didn't reply because he was upset, and didn't want his wife to know that he was stupid.

Sally thought that he didn't love her any more, and she started to get a crust herself.

Sally and John found it difficult, and uncomfortable to cuddle because of their hard crusts.

Their daughter Sue wanted a hug from her mother, but because of her mother's crust, she didn't want to. Sue thought her mother didn't really love her, and she started to get a crust too.

The family didn't like each other any more, everyone kept to themselves, they were very unhappy. John would stay out late, and Sue would play video games all day.

One day the baker was cleaning his bakery and noticed the family of crusty loaves near the cream puffs. He asked John "why do you have a crust? I didn't bake you with a crust", John replied "I don't know why, ever since I found out I was stupid it just got harder and harder".

The baker said to John, "Who said you were stupid", John replied "my boss".

The baker replied, "I make all the loaves in the bakery including your boss. I have noticed all of them making mistakes, after all they are all made out of the same dough".

The baker continued "Did you learn from your mistake?", John replied "yes". The baker said "do you understand what I meant when I said you are all made of the same dough".

John thought for a minute, and agreed. His crust started falling off. Soon he was nice and soft just like he used to be.

John told his wife Sally what had happened, and apologized for keeping it a secret. She realized he had loved her all along, it was just that his crust got in the way. Then her crust fell off, and they kissed.

Their daughter Sue came home from school, her mother hugged her and apologized for not giving her any hugs recently. Sue's crust fell off, and were all happy once again.

The baker was also happy because the whole family had learnt from their mistakes.
