Winter 2001 - First Quarter

In Progress -=- NOT FINAL

I seem to be spending entirely too much time shoveling snow this quarter...

NEWS ON THE WEB
Cork Might've Been Founded By Vikings
The Irish Times asks Vikings Streets ahead of Finbarr? Legend says Cork was founded by St. Finnbar, but a report of dendochronological tests reveals the first houses and streets around South Gate - Tuckey Street were from the Viking Age. Archaeology Cork Corporation's development and planning - Archaeology Section explains some of the local historical preservation efforts that have to be included in Cork building developments.

More Genentics Studies
Academic Press' Daily Inscight on March 16th has an article called Vikings' Genetic Legacy explaining a new genetics publication of local populations using mitochondrial DNA, which is particularly passed on through the maternal line. The study kinda confirms that norsemen settled within the populations a thousand years ago taking both scandinavian and local women as wives wherever they settled in the North Atlantic. The study is part of the Oxford Genetic Atlas Project. The new report can be found in the March edition of the American Journal of Human Genetics.

British Heart Attacks
Independant reporter Jonathan Thompson writes Vikings: rape, pillage and myocardial infarction. In a study of family heart disease in the UK by the British Heart Foundation and the Medical Research Council a series of genetic anomalies, such as familial hypercholesterolaemia, are believed a fatal inheritance from three centuries of inter-breeding with the Viking invaders.

Bog Myrtle Bearserks
The BBC has an article on chemical research of the Bog Myrtle, Myrica gale, in Secret of Norseman's Potion Revealed. The active ingredients are not listed, but traditionally Myrtle was used to treat wounds, depression, repel insects and aid memory. On the downside unpurified Myrtle also contains psycotroyic and carcinogenic compounds.

Skiringssal - Kaupang in Norway
The Independant's David Keys wrote Vikings' home reveals extent of their wanderlust about archaeological finds at Sciringes Heal - Kaupang, just south of Oslo and near the town of Larvik. Items estimated to have come from areas across the european continent demonstrate the range of trade in the viking age. Building remains at a second site about a mile to the north include a large hall associated with the Yngling Dynasty that had burned down. The article is repeated at National Geographic.

A related story at Discovering Archaeology's Norway's First Town - A Viking Settlement Surprises Archaeologists discusses finds around Skiringssal - Kaupang and that evidence point to the location being occupied year-round. That would make the place the only known town in ninth century Viking Norway instead of a seasonal market-port. Sciringes Heal - Kaupang was founded in the 780's and is believed to be Norways earliest town. It was abandoned around 900 A.D. More information can be found on the project's homepage, http://www.kaupang.uio.no. Associate Professor Dagfinn Skre, Department of Archaeology, History of Art and Conservation, University of Oslo, is head of The Kaupang Investigation 2000-2006 and wrote an detailed article in Apollon, the University of Oslo research magazine entitled Was Kaupang Norway's first Town?
