Why did not Jesus, and the rest, prohibit alcohol if it is that hazardous? Why did people need exactly 19 century to understand the evil side of alcohol, something that all those great Church Fathers guided by the Holy Spirit were oblivious of.
I would suggest you to reflect on the ways Islam treated the issue of alcohol. Please read the book "Islam and Alcoholism" written by Prof. Malik Badri, which is only one of many written on the same topic and in various languages.

Cigarettes are the starter drug with the youngest age of onset. Prohibition as adopted by Congress, was political, i.e., not based on sound medical science. Medical research finds that emphasis should be put on the starter drug, cigarettes. Prohibiting
alcohol is as erroenous medically as prohibiting lung cancer. Michigan had a better idea, and was first to vote to repeal Prohibition. Our reason: in 1909, we had banned cigarettes, the starter drug, details at http://members.tripod.com/medicolegal/mich
ganlaw.htm. So by banning cigarettes, there is no need to deal with saubsequent issues, whether alcohol, lung cancer, or drugs. Once cigarettes are gone, those problems will essentially not exist, i.e., will revert to the pre-tobacco level.
