Introduction
In the introduction of the lesson, I pick from various activities. I might do a read aloud of
a fictional book, sing songs, assisted read, do an activity on the theme, or do
Picture and Words.
Development
The development of the lesson teaches the content of the unit. I usually begin by reading
a content(non-fictional) book to the class. I then do a hands-on
activity to reinforce the content. Sometimes I do Picture and Words after the book.
Then we do a lot of assisted reading of charts with songs, poems, LEA stories, and
pattern stories based on the theme.
- From the charts, I pick out sight words, letters, and sounds(phonics).
- Then we do a letter chart and activities with that letter.
- Later in the year, I pick out word families from the charts and we do activities with the
families.
Conclusion
In the conclusion of the lesson, we always journal. Then we may have another read
aloud, assisted read, or do an art activity.
