"The aim of living is life itself." --Goethe

Now mostly just a collection of links, this page will present information on a variety of social issues that are of concern to me. As the saying goes, "if you aren't outraged, you aren't paying attention."

"Not to hurt our humble brethren (the animals) is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission - to be of service to them whenever they require it. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men."

Saint Francis of Assisi

Check out my page of Things You Can Do to Make a Difference.
It is full of useful and relatively easy changes you can make in your life to make a huge positive impact on the planet. Show the world that you, at least, are doing the right thing.

Create your own Butterfly Garden!
Here you can find information on how to create a little garden that will induce the presence of butterflies in your life, and quite likely encourage the recovery of endangered species.

Tibetan flagFree Tibet

Since 1949, the people of Tibet have been fighting to regain their homeland from the Chinese. The Dalai Lama, spiritual and political leader of this beautiful land, was forced to flee to India for asylum. As if the loss of freedom and homeland were not enough, the atrocities being inflicted upon the women and children of Tibet are particularly terrible and hard to imagine when you have led a soft Western life, as I have, but it is all horribly true. A land of music and peace has been turned into a house of horrors. Our support will help them to survive emotionally and physically this dark time. Rangzen!

Peace for the land whose old name meant "peace." Someday, there will be no blood on the grass.

Animal Rights or Conservation Issues

Bat Conservation International is the premier site for protection or endangered and extraordinarily important bats. Also contains their online catalog. Bats not only pollinate and spread many endangered and beautiful flowers, they keep insect populations under control and are just plain keen.

Defenders of Wildlife is one of the most powerful animal rights groups of the day. They are the ones responsible to returning wolves to Yellowstone. Go support them.

IGC:EcoNet provides alerts, headlines, and links to environmental and social issues all over the Internet. This is one of the most complete sites around for a wide variety of issues, from women's rights to endangered species. Also check our their frugal living section.

Everyday Ways You Can Help Clean Up the Earth is technically a subsection of the IGC page, but it's very well done, as are all of their pages. These things are so simple! Implement them today.

League of Conservation Voters provides the Environmental Scorecard, a listing of how each Representative and Senator votes on each conservation issue. Keep track of what your elected politicians are doing; let them know if you don't agree with their voting, and also support them when you think they're doing a great job. Your voice *does* count.

Project Vote Smart is where you should go to find all kinds of information about who represents you and how they are doing. Again, keep up with this or don't complain when you aren't happy.

Greenpeace, of course is of the most influential and visible environmental organizations around today. You may not agree with all of their tactics, but it's hard not to agree with their purpose. If the world dies, so do we. It's not hard to understand, people.

Vegetarian Things

Everyone has to make their own decision about whether or not to become a vegetarian. There are hundreds of good reasons, like what I call the Religious Argument, the Health Argument, the Environment Arguement. Earch Argument is enough by itself. But why am *I* a vegetarian? Because I don't want to feel as if I have to kill to live. I want to create, not destroy. Life does that enough without my help.

Visit 101 Reasons Why I Am a Vegetarian to see why you might want to consider being one, too.

the Good Karma Cafe for recipes, information like a substitutions list, articles on living a vegetarian lifestyle, and all sorts of goodies. Just an all-around nifty place.

Vegetarian Pages provides good information for new vegetarians, listing for veg friendly restaurants, etc. A wonderful resource to frequent.

Vegetarian Resource Group has recipes, excerpts from the Vegetarian Journal, and other such things.

Veggies Unite! is a fabulous site for new and experienced vegetarians alike. They have recipes, a nutritional analysis tool, and things like the weekly meal planner and grocery list maker.

Social or Humanitarian Issues

National Children's Advocacy Center specializes in providing a multidisciplinary approach toward prevention and intervention services for victims of child sexual abuse and their families. This particular organization is located in Huntsville, Alabama, but there are links to Regional Children's Advocacy Centers all over the country.

Amnesty International USA

Because no one is free when someone lives in chains. One of the most precious parts of life is freedom and the right to control your own person. These people live in misery and horror, mistreated because of their political and/or religious beliefs and are usually fighting for things Americans take for granted and would support.
