Sex Rays

Sofie had a mental disorder. She thought that people around her were firing invisible rays at her that would slowly turn her into a man. One day while driving along a main road, she looked in the rear vision mirror. Believing that the driver behind her was firing rays at her, she swerved into the next lane to avoid being hit by them. In doing so, she ended up in a serious accident. Sofie was taken into custody and forced to go on medication for her condition. After 6 months she was behaving normally. She no longer believed that anyone was shooting sex rays at her. From her understanding, she had been suffering a delusional mental disorder.

Sofie was well for eight years after that, and had since married a very nice young man. He always encouraged her to take her medication, and she lovingly kept taking it. But in the eighth year, her husband died in a boating accident. Sofie was so upset, she stopped taking her medication. Again, within 6 months of discontinuing her medication, she was back to square one, believing everyone was shooting sex change rays at her. She returned to her psychiatrist, accusing him of lying to her. "You told me that all these things didn't really happen, but see, it's all happening again!" Sofie reasoned that the psychiatrist must be in on the conspiracy against her, and such is the mental condition that this is the belief she held, even as she attempted to kill herself in the psychiatrist's office with a letter opener.
