A Sermon by Reverend Hollis Ray Mathis

reetings, holy children of God, in the wonderful name of our lord and saviour Jesus, the Christ. The sermon subject for today is:

Why some men preach almost exclusively from the Old Testament

There are several reasons that I can think of, why men choose to preach from the Old Testament. The first is they believe in God, the father, but they do not believe that Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, is the Christ, the messiah, and the anointed one. These men are antichrist, for except a man believe in God the father, and Jesus Christ the son, they are antichrist. L john 2:22 who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ, he is antichrist, that denieth the father and the son. Secondly, children of God, there are men that call themselves Christian ministers, that know very little about Jesus Christ. For except God reveal the things of Christ Jesus to them, they will never know Christ. Let me make this very clear, a man cannot even call Jesus Christ lord, except it be revealed to him. L Corinthians l2:3 wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the lord, but by the Holy Ghost. The third reason that I believe that men preach almost exclusively from the Old Testament is, because they are trying to drag the children of God back under the Old Testament. When you see evil brothers, and sisters, in the lord : think money. You may wonder, children of God, how these men can be enriched by dragging the children of God under the Law of Moses? Under the Law of Moses, God placed a tax upon the tribes of Israel to support the tribe of Levi, the priestly tribe. The tax is called the tithe. It required all Israel pay one tenth of all their increase that came into their possession of produce, or the increase in their flocks or herds, or income of moniesto the tribe of Levi. But this tax, the tithe was not brought over into the New Testament, because kings do not tax their own children, they tax children of strangers. St. Matthew l7:24 and when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to peter, and said, doth not your master pay tribute? 25. He saith, yes, and when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, what thinkest thou, Simon? Of whom do the kings of the earth take custom, or tribute: of their own children, or of strangers? 26. Peter saith unto him, of strangers, Jesus saith unto him, then are the children free, 27. Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up: and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shall find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee. Saints of God when we, the elect of God, are called to repentance, justified, glorified, translated out of the world, and into the body of Christ, and receive the washing of regeneration, and the renewing of the holy ghost, we become the children of God. God is king of kings, and lord of lords, and when we are adopted into his family: we become royalty. And since kings do not tax their own children, we are free from the tithing law. There is not one scripture in the Old Testament, nor the New Testament that commands the children of God to pay tithes to the church. But those men that preach tithing, may find when they stand before God, that they have brought themselves under the tithing law. For men cannot preach one thing and live another. Galatians 2:l8 for if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. Romans 2:l7 behold, thou art called a Jew, and resets in the law, and makest thy boast of God, l8. And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law. L9. And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness. 20. An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law. 2l. Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? Thou that preaches a man should not steal, dost thou steal? 22. Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? Thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege? 23. Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God? Beloved of God, if those men that preach tithing, are judged by the tithing laws of Moses, they will find that tithing law according to Moses had to be kept to the letter. If a man was one penny, or one ear of corn, or one sheep, short they would go under the curse: a sentence of condemnation. In the days of Malachi, the prophet, there was not a person in all Israel that was able to keep the tithing law to the letter, therefore, they all was put under the curse. In these verses of scripture that I am about to read, God is speaking to Malachi. Malachi 3:8 will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me, but ye say, wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings, 9. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. L0. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the lord of hosts, if I will not open you the widows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. The forth reason that I believe that men, that call themselves Christians, preach almost exclusively from the old testament is because, their doctrine will not bear close examination. If a man preaches from the old testament he does not have to deal with subjects as Jesus Christ is the son of God, neither does he have to teach on the subject of baptism, nor the lord's supper, neither does he have to teach on the subject of the children of God, being in the body of Christ. Neither do they had to deal with the subject of receiving the Holy Ghost, and the gifts of the spirit. Neither do they have to explain the ritual of the laying on of hands. Faithless men believe, that when a man comes as a candidate for baptism, that he is a dry sinner: after he is baptized, they believe that the only change is, that he is a wet sinner. But I believe that when the elect of God are baptized, that they are baptized out of the world, and into the body of Christ. Galatians 3:27 for as many of you as have been baptized into Christ, have put on Christ. Listen carefully children of God, eternal life is in the body of Christ. And there is no other way to get into the body of Christ, except through the water. As the water saved Noah, even now baptism does save us. L john 5:ll and this is the record that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his son. L peter 3:l8 for Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the spirit: l9. By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison: 20. Which sometime were disobedient, when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is eight souls were saved by water. 2l. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us ( not the putting away the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God. ) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Beloved, faithless men do not believe that it is necessary to partake of the lord's supper for salvation. When the species of the unleaven bread, and the fruit of the vine is blessed, they do not believe that the unleavened bread becomes the body of Christ, neither do they believe that the fruit of the vine becomes the blood of Christ. If they cannot see, taste, smell, and a difference: they cannot believe. It takes faith to believe that a change has come over the substance. When a man of God, within whom the spirit of God lives: comes to perform the ritual of the lord's supper, and rises holy hands and blesses the unleavened bread, and the fruit of the vine, and passes the substance among the congregation. I believe that they have in their hands the most precious substance in all the world, the body: and the blood of Christ. For except a man eat of the flesh of Jesus, and drink his blood he will have no life in him. Jesus Christ, the son of God, has said these words: reading from St. John 6:53 the Jesus said unto them, verily, verily, I say unto you, except ye eat of the flesh of the son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. 54. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life: and I will raise him up at the last day. 55. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. Saints of God, Satan has devised a clever way of leading the children of God to study the wrong will, the wrong testament. It is called the Sunday school book. By using the Sunday school book, Satan leads the Christians to study the Old Testament. If men preach and teach wrongly from the old testament, they will have God's children offering up sacrifices, circumcising themselves with the intent to keep the law of Moses, stoning witches, adulterers, stubborn children, stoning people that work on the seventh day of the week, the Sabbath. Have God's children killing their enemies. All these things we, as children of God are not to do. Most, if not all, the things that I just mentioned are mortal sins. Let me give you an example of what I am talking about. If a man is circumcised before he becomes a Christian, in Christ, it is nothing. But if he circumcises himself, with the intent to keep the Law of Moses', after that he has been baptized into the body of Christ, and has received the washing of regeneration, and the renewing of the Holy Ghost. He will fall from grace, and Christ will profit him nothing. Galatians 5:l stand fast therefore in the liberty wherein Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. 2. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. 3. For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. 4. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law: ye are fallen from grace. 5. For we through the spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. Beloved of God, we as Christians, are not to shape our lives by the Old Testament, but by the New Testament. There are many righteous acts in the Old Testament, but we, as children of God, cannot be made righteous in word, thought, and deed by the Old Testament. If we could have been made righteous by the Old Testament, then Christ is dead in vain. By the Old Testament no flesh shall be justified, vindicated, acquitted. Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live: yet not I, but Christ lived in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. 2l. I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. Come, children of God, let us reason together, if your earthly dad made two wills, two testaments, and there were certain things in both testaments that had to be done to inherit. Would you not study the last will and testament, for if a man makes two testaments it is only the last will and testament that will be valid, after the testator's death. Since we the children of God are not to shape our lives by the Old Testament, you may wonder why it was recorded. Christianity had it roots in the Old Testament, and by the Old Testament we know our history. There are prophecies in the Old Testament that tells us, the saints of God, what will happen in the future. And there are admonishments in the Old Testament that warn us of certain acts.
