The Middlesex Canal, incorporated in 1793 to oversee the planning and con- struction of a canal between the Merrimac river in Lowell and the Mill Pond in Charlestown, named Loammi Baldwin as its first vice-president and chief engineer. He was born in 1744 in Woburn, was trained as a cabinet maker and also was a builder of pumps, a colonel in the Revolutionary army, the first sheriff of Middlesex County, a state senator, a state representative, the discoverer of the Baldwin apple, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The successful completion of the canal was due mainly to his expert personal supervision of every aspect of the construction and his dedication to complet- ing any job which he started.

Each of the next two entries is part of the same genealogical website put up by descendants of (among MANY others) Henry and Loammi Baldwin. The research into Colonial and Revolutionary histories is detailed and exhaustive. But most of all, it's fascinating. My links are pointed narrowly to Loammi Baldwin but I doubt you'll be able to resist roaming through these pages for hours. Be warned !!! ;-)
