Strength in Discipleship

A person who believes the doctrines and teachings of the Christian faith is called a believer. But God calls us to more than just believing doctrines. One who is fully committed to practicing the teachings of Jesus and living out the Christian faith is called a disciple. Disciples are the ones who experience the true joy of Christianity.

A disciple is also a representative or ambassador for the gospel of Jesus Christ. Disciples model the Christian faith to non-believers and less spiritually-mature believers through their words, their actions, and their lives. (I Timothy 4:12) Being a disciple therefore involves responsibility and commitment.

But discipleship also involves blessings. Jesus once sent out 70 of his representatives in pairs to different cities, ministering the gospel (Luke 10:1-20). They returned, gleefully telling Jesus about the power they had over demons. Jesus said to them, "Behold, I give you authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy and nothing shall by any means hurt you." (v.19)

Disciples receive this kind of empowerment. Not long ago I spoke with a woman who had been through a very painful divorce several years prior. From that trauma she came to know the Lord, and began to live in discipleship and fellowship with other Christians. She said to me, "I've become so strong, Andrew." Her relationship with Christ had protected and strengthened her in facing life's challenges. (see Luke 6:46-49) If we are willing to submit ourselves in discipleship, we will be empowered too.

God Bless you.
