Spiritual Medicines
At home I have a medicine cabinet full of all sorts of stuff. If I have a headache or fever I can take Tylenol, aspirin, or Advil. If I have a bad cold I can take some Nyquil, which puts we to sleep for about 12 hours. I also have a zit medicine, Clearasil, although I haven't used it much since high school. Even if I get sunburned, I have Solarcaine, which cools the burn.
There are all kinds of medicines for physical health. But what about spiritual illness? Supermarkets aren't as well-stocked with medicines for this, but our faith-health is really more important. The Bible teaches that our bodies will someday perish, but our Spirit will live on (I Corinthians 15:42).
Life is full of spiritual sicknesses:
- If you're feeling down look at Romans 8:26-27.
- If you're scared or fearful look up Psalm 125.
- If you're troubled with lust look at Song of Solomon 3:5.
- If you're angry at someone check out Matthew 5:22-24.
Fortunately, God has his own medicines to help us. By the power of His Holy Spirit he can develop Christian virtues of character, which function like antibodies: they can prevent the spiritual sicknesses from taking over our lives. Some examples are....
- Endurance & Perseverance -- Hebrews 12:1-4
- Prayerfulness -- Matthew 6:5-15
- Confession of Sin -- I John 1:8-9
- Christian Fellowship -- Hebrews 10:24-25
God Bless you.
