Turning the Other Cheek

Jesus ministry happened in a time when the death penalty was a way of life. People could be put to death for murder, adultery, practicing sorcery, homosexuality, and even cursing their parents. (See Leviticus 20.) This teaching was summed up in the Old Testament: "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth."

Within this environment Jesus gave a teaching that was considered astonishing. He said, "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away." (Matthew 5:38-42) There's tremendous power in this teaching!

Today, however, our culture still places high value on vengeance. Retaliation, not turning the other cheek, is the norm. I've counseled youth and adults in conflict for several years now. Whenever issues are discussed it often boils down to both parties saying, "They started it," right before a whole series of actions came about in "trying to get the other person back." I even know of one person who keeps a written record of every person she needs to get back at.

Imagine what it would be like if the world followed Jesus' teaching. Imagine all the love and peace that would fill the world if people would forego revenge and leave it to God. There's great power in forgiveness!

God Bless you.
