The Dangers of Spiritual Neglect

About a year ago I was invited to guest-preach at a small-town church. As I was driving into the town I saw an old, abandoned school building. I stopped to take a look at it. At one time it looked like a nice structure, no doubt. It was a three-story, brick building with windows rounded on top, a vaulted entrance, and a bell tower on the roof.

In talking with townsfolk (after I had preached) I learned that it closed in 1962. Since then it had become dilapidated in condition: part of the roof had caved in, and all the windows had been broken. Now it's a useless structure, unsafe to even walk in.

Our faith in Jesus can be similar to that old building. It's a beautiful thing, but if it's neglected it will deteriorate and become useless. Getting separated from regular Bible study habits, prayer, fellowship, and the sacraments can be a dangerous thing for us spiritually. Hebrews 2:1 says, "...we must hold on all the more firmly to the truths we have heard, so that we will not be carried away."

God Bless you.
