• THE GLORY OF SRIVILLIPUTTUR..

  • Minnar thadamathilchule Villiputhur enru oru kaal
    Sonnar kazhalkamalam Sudinom

The purport of the above sentence from the Thirupallandu Thanian by Sri pandiya bhattar is

"Let us offer our respects with folded hands when the word villiputtur(srivilliputtur) the town surrounded by shining forts is uttered even once"

Srivilliputtur (Shenbagaranyakshetram) finds mention in the Brahmakaivatsapuranam and the varaha puranam. The Varaha puranam fortells the existence of srivilliputtur and the consequent visit of bhagavan during the varaha avataram. The brahmakaivatsa puranam mentions the location of vatapatrasayi temple in Srivilliputtur.

The srivilliputtur divya desam has the unique distinction among all other divya desams of being the birthplace of 2 important azhwars among the twelve azhwars, sri periyazhwar, who became the father in law of the lord ranganatha himself and sri andal who was the incaranation of bhoomadevi and attained union with the lord Ranganathan at srirangam

It is one of the few divyadesams where all the Srivaishnava temple traditions and festivals are followed regularly every year. The town which wakes up to the sounds of Thiruppavai pervades with the sublime atmosphere throughout the day.

Even now in the true spirit of sri andal's paasurams when there is a long period without rainfall, People form groups in their respective streets and do a parayanam of reciting the famous aazhi mazhai kanna verse from thiruppavai certain number of times every day.
Sure enough with the lords grace there is rain within a few days

The glory and importance of Srivilliputtur and sri andal's Thiruppavai is best brought out in the following verse by sri Vedappiran bhaTTar.

    Kodhai pirandha oor kovindan vaazhumoor
    sOdhi mani maadam thOnrum oor
    neediyaal nallapaththar vazhum oor
    naanmaraigal odhumoor
    Villiputtur vedakkonur
    paadhangal theerkum paraman adi kaatum
    vedham anithikum vithaagum
    kothai thamizh
    aiyaindum aindhum ariyadha manidarai
    vaiyam sumappadhu vambu

    Translation of the above verse.

The first five lines describe the greatness of srivilliputtur

SRIVILLIPUTTUR ,the birth place of kothai is

    The residence of lord govinda

where the sun rises over the well decorated buildings.

where the bhagavathas live according to the vedic dharma

Where the four vedas are chanted regularly .

The next five lines describe the glory of the thiruppavai

Thiruppavai washes away our sins and shows the way to the lord.It is the essence of the vedas. Those who do not know the paasurams of thiruppavai sung by sri andal are a burden to this earth.
