Price for popularity

You see them everyday
Walking all alone in the hallway
Or hiding behind the books they read
And you wish that you could do something
Show them how good life can be
When you have friends and popularity
Teach them all the lessons that you learned so long ago
That brought you into the world that you know
So they aren’t left behind to die
Like all the rest that wouldn’t swim with the tide
Because it’s impossible that someone really wants to drown
And every bit of you wants to keep them from going down
But you don’t say a word or do a thing
Because you know that only suicide would it bring
And you know you’d be swimming against the tide
So you let yourself down on the inside
you close your eyes and take a breath
Then wade on by a promised death
What possible difference could it make
You convince yourself as you try to stay in the wake
Because your friends are what keep you afloat
The same ones that put weight around the people’s throats
You are bound to their desires to survive
Yes it is them that keeps you alive

So maybe they aren’t the only helpless ones after all
And how do you know the tide doesn’t lead you to the waterfall?
