French Open 2001
French Open 2001
Well, we're back at Roland Garros, the place where the French Open is held every year. The women's final was held on Saturday, June 9, 2001. The finalists were USA Jennifer Capriati and Kim Clijsters (Belgium). In a three set match, both players showed remarkable concentration. This time was the first ever that a Belgian has reached a grand slam. Jennifer Capriati defeated Kim Clijsters in what was perhaps a grueling match. 1-6, 6-4 and 12-10. The third set was the longest ever played in the French Open history. Capriati earned $557,000 as the first prize. Ranked fourth seed, 25-year old Capriati is sure to move up to become #1 soon. 18-year old, Kim Clijsters, ranked #12, put up a strong fight, and is sure to make history as well. This is Jennifer Capriati's second grand slam this year; she won her first one at the French Open in January. In her acceptance speech, after being presented with the trophy, Capriati dedicated her win to her fellow tennis player and friend, Corina Morariu, who is being treated for leukemia. She also thanked her family for their support.
On Sunday, June 10, 2001, the men's final was held. The two competitors were Brazil's Gustavo Kuerten (ranked #1) and Spain's Alex Corretja (ranked #13). The first set went to Alex Corretja. But then Kuerten came back with a vengeance and fought his way back. He won the next three sets, the fourth being the easiest for him. The results: 6-7, 7-5, 6-2, 6-0. Kuerten won the French Open for the third time. The first time was in 1997, then again last year, and now in 2001. After winning the French Open, Kuerten drew a heart on the red clay court and then lay down in it.
