U.S. Open 2000

One of New York's finest places to visit is the U.S. Open. The Grand Slam tournament was held from August 28 to September 10. The women's final was held on Saturday, September 9, 2000. The two players were #2 Lindsay Davenport (USA) and #3 Venus Williams. The match was delayed because of rain, but when the players came back out to the court, they were ready to play. Venus Williams defeated Lindsay Davenport in two sets: 6-4, 7-5. This is the first U.S. Open title for Venus Williams, and her second Grand Slam.

On the men's side of tennis, the two finalists were #4 Pete Sampras (USA) and SURPRISE! #6 Marat Safin (RUSSIA). The biggest surprise came in the end when Marat Safin easily defeated Pete Sampras in three sets: 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. When Marat Safin received his trophy, he was asked how he had been able to return Pete Sampras' serve. His reply was: "I don't know." 1
