Stan Wins His 2nd Jacket!
Before we get started with a recap of the concluding events to the 2006 AMFGA season, a brief history of the hallowed Blue Plaid Jacket for our newer members. The jacket was purchased in early 1993 at a Goodwill store in Brampton for the princely sum of $5.00 after the acquisition team had been shown the door at Harry Rosen's, Lou Myles, Corry's and other fine men's clothiers. Unlike those pikers at Augusta National who run the Masters, a new jacket is not produced each year for our champion, there is only the one unique item of hallowed haberdashery that is awarded at the end of each season. 1991 champion, Geoff was the first AMF'er to don the coat of coats at the 1993 opening ceremonies. In the first 15 years of competition there had been only two multiple winners. Brian (1993, 1999, 2001) and Billy C (1995, 1998). Well, a new man has joined those ranks after the 2006 H.A.M. Invitational. Read on…
It was wet and cold this last Saturday in September, but with six AMF'ers in the running for the title there was electricity in the cool, damp conditions at Oakville Executive. Stu went into the final round with a slim lead over Bryan. 2005 champ Stu was seeking to become the first back-to-back AMFGA champion and Bryan was looking for his first title. 2006 Super Senior champion Billy T and 2006 Comeback-Player-Of-The-Year, Frank completed the final foursome. But it was 2004 champion Stan playing in the penultimate group that charged up from 5th place to win the H.A.M. and earn his 2nd AMFGA title! This marked the greatest final day charge by a AMFGA champion. Stan fired a 76, net –4 t win the $30.00 first prize and edged Bryan for the title by $3.75. Bryan did just about all he could by carding a 75, net –3 but because he was tied by Paul (84) and Billy C (73) he only made $5.00 today.

The Super Senior and Team Competitions were decided in previous weeks so this weeks results had no bearing on the standings except for bragging rights
Jim who'd missed most of 2006 with health issues returned for the H.A.M. and won the Longest Putt competition on the 18th green. Bryan captured the Closest-to-the-Pin honours on #4.
As is the custom there was no Beer Game at the H.A.M. Thanks to brother Paul for managing the Beer Fund.
Another H.A.M. tradition to wrap up the season is to ante up $5.00 apiece for the final Cleaners game. It was good timing to win a Cleaner as only 3 were paid out this day. Winning $20.00 each were Brian (3), Stu (10) and Nigel (15).
In summary, despite our 16th season being our worst for weather with 4 rainouts, it was another exciting, fun campaign! The race for the AMFGA title was one of the closest ever. Did you know their were 8 different major (including ties) winners in 2006?
So, cheers to us and the countdown starts to the kick-off for the 17th A.M.F.G.A. season on April 12, 2007!
