On August 30, 1999, Rachel was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (Also known as acute myeloid leukemia or AML) at Children's Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri. She went through nine months of treatment, including chemo and a bone marrow transplant. In April, 2000, she was diagnosed with pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (now called pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia). She died at Children's Mercy Hospital on May 17, 2000.
Rachel began working on this home page in March, 2000. The bunny, Cindy, was a gift given to her by her cousins, Doug and Vicky and their spouses, when she was first in the Hospital. It became an alter ego for her. Rachel was shy and inward. Cindy became loud and brazen.... though generally well behaved!
This page was never completed but I have added other information to it and will continue to do so concerning Rachel, her make-believe world of Rachelville, Cindy, her family, her life, her death and how it has touched her family, friends and many others who never met her personally.
What follows here is the main page of the RACHELVILLE page Rachel began... or should I say, "Cindy" began. Included are photos of the various stuffed animals who played a part in this world... and acted out little daily melodramas (usually with Rachel and her Dad playing the various roles) at home and in the hospital. I have also included emails written during Rachel's illness, poems writing by family members, etc etc. So... let me hand this page over to the bunny who still sits in our living room as a witness to this life that surprised us, challenged us, changed us, captivated us and continues to touch us... TAKE IT AWAY, CINDY!
