SENSEI YOUNG A. SMITH, III

HE BEGAN KARATE AT THE AGE OF 7 UNDER SENSEI DR. DIRK MOSIG, WHO IS NOW A MASTER 8th DEGREE BLACK BELT IN SHORIN RYU KARATE. SENSEI YOUNG STUDIED FOR A BRIEF PERIOD OF TIME THEN STOPPED TRAINING, ALTHOUGH HE STAYED IN TOUCH WITH THE MARTIAL ARTS THROUGH HIS DAD.

WHEN SENSEI YOUNG WAS 15 HE DECIDED TO GIVE KARATE ANOTHER TRY. HE SIGNED UP FOR A CLASS OFFERED BY SENSEI DOUG WALKER AT LORETTA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. HE STUDIED UNDER SENSEI WALKER UNTIL HE REACHED HIS BROWN BELT. SENSEI WALKER RETIRED AND SENSEI DON K. STEINER TOOK THE CLASS OVER AND SENSEI YOUNG OBTAINED HIS 1st KYU BROWN BELT UNDER SENSEI STEINER. HE THEN STUDIED UNDER SENSEI GEORGE TORRES , ONE OF SENSEI WALKER AND SENSEI STEINER'S BLACK BELTS. HE RECEIVED HIS BLACK BELT UNDER SENSEI TORRES.

ABOUT A YEAR AFTER HE RECEIVED HIS BLACK BELT HE BEGAN TO TEACH A CLASS AT FORREST HIGH SCHOOL AND LATER ADDED A CLASS AT JEFF DAVIS MIDDLE SCHOOL. DURING THIS TIME HE BEGAN TO STUDY UNDER MASTER JACK HOGAN AND OBTAINED HIS 2nd DEGREE BLACK BELT ON APRIL 4, 1990 AND HIS 3rd DEGREE BLACK BELT ON MARCH 8, 1994. 

IN JUNE OF 1994, HE AND HIS DAD DECIDED TO OPEN YOUNG'S KARATE SCHOOL. HE CONTINUES TO TEACH THERE AS ONE OF THE OWNERS AND CHIEF INSTRUCTORS. HE ALSO HAS BECOME A LICENSED MASSAGE THERAPIST AND WORKS FULL TIME FOR MURRAY HILL MINISTRIES, INC.
