Secretary's notes:
4/13/09

Well, the first week will be postponed until April 28th due to the crappy weather we have today.  See you guys on the 28th!

Welcome back, everyone!  The 2009 season is set to start on April 21!  I am trying to verify, but will probably be treating this as the 50th anniversary of the league.  We have 28 players this year, which will break up into four flights of seven golfers each.  Each flight has a Celebrity golfer, who will shoot the simple average of the flight each week.  He or She will keep a handicap and score points throughout the season.  Hopefully, he or she will not place second like Elisha Cuthbert did last year in the B flight!  If your flight would like to change your Celebrity golfer, just let me know.

For the new golfers (or returning ones who haven't paid much attention), here is generally how the league runs:

Each week, you will have a scheduled match against another golfer from your flight.  You will find this schedule either on the weekly sheet or on the season long schedule (
1st Half, 2nd Half).

The tee times and groupings are set randomly and are meant to have you play with most of the rest of the league.  There is necessary flexibility in the schedule as we are dealing with mostly adults with work and lives, but for the most part, try an play with your opponent and if you cannot, please let your partner know.  For those playing the clebrity golfer, there is more flexibility, so feel free to jump into a threesome or match up with another person playing a celebrity.

See below for comments on matching cards ahead of time when you know you will miss a week.

Alternate Formats:  We have designated three weeks as Alternate Format weeks.  On these weeks we play a different format (Greensomes, scramble, three-club, etc.) and there are separate prizes for these competitions.  More details will be forthcoming prior to the events themselves.

Match scoring:  Each match is worth 22 points.  Each hole is worth two points with handicaps applied to the approrpiate holes.  The final four points are determined by the overall nine-hole score, again with the handicap applied.  There are plenty of people available to help with scoring your first few cards.

Eclectic:  your eclectic score is determined by your best performance on each hole over the 15 normal league weeks (funky format weeks do not count for eclectic).  The eclectic competition gets quite heated near the end of the season.

Rob

The cardinal rule is play golf, have fun and try to play against your opponent.

Missing a week:  If you know you will be absent, please notify your opponent for that week and try to play your match ahead of time.  for instance, if you are going to miss week 3, let your opponent for week 3 know and then match cards with him on either week 1 or 2.  If you absolutely cannot match ahead, I will reluctantly allow makeups the next time you both are playing.  Too many makeups can wreak havoc with the league scoring, so I try not to allow them.  If possible, please play your matches ahead for absences.

Absences and subs:  If you miss a week, there are no subs as far as the league is concerned, but you may send someone to play in your place.  Let your opponent know and he can try to manage the tee time with your replacement.

Rules:  The league has settled on a sort of winter rules approach to the game.  They are mostly the Rules of Golf with a few exceptions.  There is an attempt to write them down in the rules link below, but the gist of it is:  Roll the ball, but don't give yourself more than an improvement to your lie (don't roll it to the fairway from the rough, or out from behind a tree).  Out of bounds or lost ball is a one stroke penalty and a drop near where it went out of bounds or where you think it should have been.  Make sure your opponent or fellow player is comfortable with your drop.  There is a large (and increasing) contingent who plays the ball down, so don't be embarrassed to play the ball down and follow the rules, just expect some abuse for allying with my holier than thou attitude on the rules! Be fair to your opponent!

Funky Formats:  We have three weeks designated as alternate format weeks.  The first one will be the day after Memorial day and will be a hi-lo Greensomes competition.  We will make random paris from the A/B and the C/D flights and the pairs will play greensomes, where each player tees off, the team selects one drive and then play alternate shot after that.  The second funky format is the 3-club challenge, where you choose three clubs and play golf!  The third funky format is TBD, let me know your favorite format and we will choose one.
