"Cheatin" Ian and "Sharky" Shaw Snatch Victory

In one of the most tightly contested events in recent history, Mark "the shark" Shaw dropped an 18ft putt on the last (20ft if he is telling the story) to steal victory in the 2006 Epob Australia Day Golf Classic. The Bookies were once again on the money as the favourites for the event Ian and Shawry, at 3 to 1,  went even with the card, par 70 and got home by a stroke from the second priced  pair of Butch and Wrighty.  Besty and Arch were one stroke further away at 2 over, with  a number of others another stroke back.

There was some money about for the pair as Ian has been almost unbeatable in the past, no matter who his partner was. However it wasn't all one way as Shawry nailed both birdie putts in the last couple of holes to pull the pair back square with the card. A check of the results proves the old adage " Drive for show putt for Dough" as Wrighty and Butch narrowly missed a birdie putt on the last that with a count back would have seen them win the event.

The playing group 2006

As is customary, the after match was well attended, with most blokes heading to the races for a few beers and a chat about the game. Good to see a few other familiar old faces in George and Higgo there as well. A few bets were had, with some guys doing well. After that most headed into the Queens, where the fellowship continued on into the night. Rumour has it that a select group continued on to a nightclub in West Perth. A few funny stories are filtering back but at this stage all that I can report are:

Ian not only had a good day on the course but off it as well. After backing himself in the golf with Butch and winning his entry fee back on top, he picked a couple of winners at the races and had a win on the casino tables on course. Pity the Bermuda Triangle toilets got him and after  $45 cab ride home, he was ralphing into the garden and tucked up in bed asleep by 8pm.

As usual Gav was upto his old tricks - heading to the toilets with his pants around his ankles at the races and later in the evening trying to get into a club with sandals on after he was knocked back the first time, he simply put them on upside down -with the soles facing up! and tried to get past the same bouncer.

If you have any more of these stories let me know and I will put them on.

The talk at this stage is for the event to head back to Dunsborough next year. It will be a long weekend and Westy and Gav are keen to organise a big weekend down there. We are hoping to get a good deal with the owners and it should be good fun. Start organizing some time off and looking for accommodation soon.
