"I have the love to win. I hate to lose. Maybe it's more the hate to lose than the love to win." (Fischler, Resch "Hot Goalies", 1997, p. 11)
Full Name: Patrick Jacques Roy
Born: Octorber 5, 1965 Quebec City, Quebec
Drafted: Montreal's 4th choice (51st overall) in the 1984 Entry Draft at the Montreal Forum on June 9th.
Current Team: Colorado Avalanche
Position: Goaltender (duh!)
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 192 lbs.
Catches: Left
Style: Butterfly. Roy is a master of the butterfly technique. He is able to sucker opponents to shoot into his huge five-hole and, at the very last moment, snaps the pads shut to deny the poor sap a goal. He plays his angles very well and gives up few juicy rebounds. Unfortunately, like all butterfly goalies, Roy leaves the upper part of the net uncovered, so many shooters try to beat him up high. Another knock on Roy's game is his average (at best) puck-handling; he is known to make bad passes that result in a goal against. Roy isn't afraid to freeze the puck if he is under a strong forecheck because he has excellent face-off men in Colorado.
