Front Suspension:
The forks are a little soft. Going with heavier fork springs will
make a substantial improvement. For riders up to 170 lbs. we recommend the fork springs out of
the 1988 KDX. For riders over 170 lbs. we recommend the progressive fork springs 18-26 lb rate. Try setting
of 6-11 clicks out on the compression adjusters. If after trying these settings you are still unhappy with
the forks, we can revalve them to suit your riding style. For 1993's give us a call.
Rear Suspension:
The stock rear spring and valving is not too bad if dialed in properly. Set the sag
at 3.75" to 4.00". Run the compression damper 6 clicks out on faster terrain to 10 clicks out on slower rocky type terrain.
Rebound settings should be from 8 clicks out on fast terrain to 12 clicks out on slower rocky terrain. If after trying these
settings you are still unhappy with the rear suspension, we can revalve the shock to suit your riding style.
Performance:
There are a number of performance products available for the KDX's which we have tried and I would recommend doing them
one step at a time so we can give you an idea of what to expect with each change. The most important improvement to start with
would be a pipe. We have tried a number of pipes in the past and found the on with the most usable power band is the FMF.
It improves the power all the way through the power band with the most improvement made in the bottom to mid-range and still
lets it rev higher than stock. If you are looking for more low end power we recommend the Boyesen Rad Valve. If you can run a
straight through silencer in your area that would be the best to run. The next best choice would be an Answer SA Pro. After these
modifications, I recommend porting, which we can tailor to your riding style. Basic jetting - we run a 158 main jet, 48 pilot jet,
and a 1173 needle in the middle position with the air screw 1/2 to 1 turn out. This jetting works well from 0 - 8000 feet and
from 50 -80 degrees.
Personal side note on this modification: I recently put the FMF pipe on my 1992 KDX 200 and What a difference a pipe makes!!!
The jetting mentioned above was also dead on. Stock jetting was 158 main, 48 pilot jet and 1172 needle in the 4th notch from top.
The bike hesitated some when throttle is chopped hard from 1/4 throttle. Followed Fredette Racing's tips above and it cleaned up the
jetting. These guys really know what they are doing!!!!!!!!!
General Tips:
Loctite the left footpeg, kick stand, kick start lever, ad reset knob on the odometer. AS these are important parts
and are costly parts you would hate to lose. To cut the bars down use a pipe cutter so it will be easier to remove the plugs.
It is best to replace the stock brake fluid with a dot3 or 4 to prevent fading.
These tips have been tested and proven for many miles. These settings are guidelines. Your area and riding style may require slight
changes in these settings.
These recommendations are just a few of the things we know about KDX's. We can supply all of the parts and perform the services.
