A CLEAN SWEEP! AZTECA WINS SPEECH AND EVALUATION CONTEST!

Superior performance makes Azteca Toastmasters a winner at the Area 4 level!

In a show of superior performance, Azteca members Karl Christensen and President Bea Briggs were swept into the “winner’s circle” at the area 4 International Speech and Evaluation contest on March 13 (lucky Friday the13th). Actually, luck had nothing to do with the outcome, only superior speaking skills on the part of both participants, Karl in the International Speech contest, and Bea, who took top honors in the Evaluation contest. Both will go on to compete in the Eastern Division contest on Saturday, April 25, 1998 at the Lemon Grove Community Center, 3146 School Lane, Lemon Grove. Payment in advance is $10, at the door, $12. (I hope for that price, we get some food). Speaking at that level, you usually get a pretty good crowd, (80 - 100) but don’t panic, Karl and Bea - from my limited experience, the bigger the crowd, the easier it is to speak (less personal, I guess). Get your money in early, save the extra 2 bucks. Hope to see a capacity Azteca crowd there, to support our winners. See you there!

  St. Patrick's Day Party
By Jim Brown

A wonderful St. Patrick's Day party held on March 15 at Lili and Ed Sorman's lovely home was a huge success. Orchestrated by Azteca Sgt. At Arms Connie Bahner, a delicious potluck repast was served, followed by excellent entertainment that seemed as if it came directly from Ireland. Started by the lovely, curvaceous Irish dancing beauty "Norma O'Townsend," dressed in a darling outfit complete with lipstick, falsies, and garter belt, who did an unforgettable dance to the tune of "I wanna be loved by you," followed by "Irish" Frank O'Jonnason who related some fascinating stories about leprechauns, Irish folklore and other Irish yarns, followed by former Azteca member Joe Sweeney, who did some stand-up comedy, the type for which he is famous. Joe included a stint assisted by members Bea Briggs, Patty O'Mara (a real name) and Jim Brown (also a real name). Azteca member Rhoda Riddell did a comedy theater routine that she had performed aboard cruise ships which included virtually everyone in the audience, keeping everyone in stitches. Members of the audience included birds, bees and flowers, a train, engineer, a young girl very ably played by Kellie Christensen who played "Lil" the principal actress in the play. Karl and Caryn Christensen, Connie Bahner, and Joan Johnson did an excellent version of a wild Irish Jig (I think), complete with the female members competing with each other for proximity to Karl. Finally, the program was turned over to the audience, who were asked to come up and tell some jokes. Comedians included Joe Sweeney, Norm Townsend, Karl Christensen, Caryn Christensen, Kellie Christensen, Patti O'Mara, Larry O'Mara, Jim Brown, Joan Johnson, Kelly Elliott and Connie Bahner. Many thanks to Alan Jonasson who rendered us a skillful rendition on the electric guitar.
What a great time we had! I'm sure everyone is looking forward to our next party. When???? Thanks also to Connie, Bea, Lili and Ed Sorman and everyone who participated by bringing some very tasty food, anyone who told jokes that I forgot, and mainly being such good sports. Who else, but Toastmasters?!! (Azteca Toastmasters).

I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to make the St.Patties day party a success. Our next party will be a combination Model T and installation party, at Jim Brown's home in Pine Valley on Saturday, June 20 or 27, firm date to be decided in the near future
