Karl does it again! Wins Eastern Division
First Runner-Up in International Speech Contest!
|
|
By Jim Brown
Saturday, April 25, 1998. Congratulations to
Karl Christensen on winning First runner- up in
the International Speech Contest at the Lemon
Grove Community Center. The event was well
attended by Azteca members Patti O'Mara, Norm
Townsend and guest Doug Somerset, Caryn
Christensen (Karl's lovely wife) Bea Briggs,
Connie Bahner, Maile Nakamura, Rhoda Riddell,
Joan Johnson, Betsy Macias and Jim and Florence
Brown. Karl gave his "Learning to
Dream" speech to what looked like over 100
people and did an outstanding job, as usual.
Congratulations also go to Bea Briggs, who was a
contestant in the Evaluation contest. Bea did not
win, but she must have come pretty close, because
she did her usual great job. Kudos also go to
Betsy for volunteering to be a "Showcase
Speaker" for the Evaluation contest. Betsy
looked very good in front of the crowd as she
gave her speech "A walk in my shoes."
All of these people got out of their
"comfort zone" to speak in front of a
large crowd, and were able to grow as speakers
because of it. Super job, people!

Speaking outside of each of our "Comfort
Zones" will give us a "quantum
leap" in our speaking prowess and personal
growth. *

Subject: The DEC Meeting Report. What's the
DEC?
The DEC is the District Executive Council,
comprised of our Division leaders, Area
governors, Club Presidents and Club Vice
Presidents for Education
Why is the DEC important to Azteca?
The program provides club leaders with an
opportunity to meet other club leaders, share
experiences, learn from inspirational speakers,
and bring new ideas back to our club.
District 5 has lots of enthusiasm!
I represented Azteca Toastmasters at the April
25th DEC meeting, and it was fun to be in the
enthusiastic atmosphere created by our District 5
leaders. Here are some highlights of the meeting
I would like to share with you.
The most memorable speech for me was given by
a club president whose club leads in new members.
She summarized a Toastmaster Club's key assets as
"Program, People, and Pizzazz."
Azteca (and any other club in District 5) can
have it's own WEB page! A fellow Toastmaster in
our district has created a WEB page model that he
has
offered to share with us. What a great way for
people to become acquainted with our club!
Are you thinking about who you can sponsor as
a new member between April 15th and June 20th? If
you bring in at least one new member, not only
will you receive prizes from the Azteca
Membership Contest, also for every "one new,
dual, or reinstated member," you'll also
receive one free movie ticket to AMC or Edwards
from Division 5!
So, continue to share Toastmasters with others
who may benefit, sponsor new members - and -
enjoy a free night at the movies!
