Consider Running for
Office! By Bea Briggs, President,
Azteca Toastmasters
What do you first think of when we announce
it's time to be thinking about Azteca club
officer elections? Have you ever held a club
officer position? Sometimes we focus so much on
the responsibility, that we miss seeing the
benefits. Club officers are enthusiastic about
what they're doing because they're having a
wonderful learning experience, they're
demonstrating their commitment to the club, and
they're having fun achieving goals as a member of
the team.
My first club officer position was Sergeant at
Arms. Here I am, a "night owl," so I
really had to discipline myself to get up a
little earlier to get things set up for the
meeting, but doing it was rewarding and fun! I
felt a sense accomplishment. As club Treasurer I
learned about club finances and enjoyed writing
out checks that weren't on my personal account!
Now, as Azteca club President, the teamwork
involved in planning and helping meet goals is,
again, rewarding and fun. I expect work - but
instead, I found Teamwork.
Each officer position gives special leadership
opportunities we don't expect! Just as there's no
better place to overcome the fear of public
speaking than at Azteca Toastmasters to improve
your leadership skills by becoming a club
officer.
As board members, officers learn how to work
as a team to accomplish club goals that support
individual members in achieving their personal
goals. Board members participate in planning. As
individual club officers, they try out new roles,
stretch toward personal growth in leadership, and
at the same time serve Azteca to help all members
achieve individual goals as better public
speakers.
Here's a brief description of each of the
officer positions. The nominating committee will
soon be calling club members as they prepare the
election ballot.
