There are many different types of combat aircraft. Some have internal bomb bays to carry their armaments in and others do not. The aircraft that do not have bomb bays have "hardpoints". These are places to attach weapons to the outside of the aircraft.

F/A-18 Hornet:
This land-based fighter is the backbone of the Canadian Air Force. It has
a crew of one pilot and has a top speed of Mach 1.8. This fighter has a
total of nine hardpoints. One on the fuselage, two semi-recessed, four
on the wings and one on each wing tip.
