GATEWAY TO THE BLUES |
Dem Blues! It's been said that The Blues was born in
Mississippi before the turn of the century, wandered around the South some, spent a bodacious
amount of time in Texas, and then turned up in Chicago just in time to father rock'n'roll.
They say it died a natural death around 1960, but rises up like Lazarus about every ten years
or so. I'm here to tell ya it sure is alive now and raising a fuss all over the world.
What is blues? Ask ten people and get ten different answers, though most everyone knows it
when they hear it -- no matter where it's performed or in what style. Brownie McGhee referred
to the blues as "the facts of life"...and Woodie Guthrie said the blues is the finger that
points to the truth and uncovers injustice. To me, it's good listen' -- sometimes it even
makes me laugh, other times, it's like the title of a book I saw once: "I've been to the
kitchen of sorrows and licked all the pots clean."
Whatever your thoughts and whatever your preferences, below are some links to help you learn
more about the blues -- its history, its performers, where to find it today.
